Writer: Vicki Phillips There is a question I've been asking myself a lot lately: When I'm tired, should I rest or should I push through? It sounds like it should have a simple answer. If you're tired, rest. Or perhaps: You're tired because you're out of shape. Push yourself. And depending on which corner of the fitness world you're listening to, you can find someone very confidently telling you either one. But what if you're not sure? What if you're trying to build strength a

Writer: Vicki Phillips There is something strange about living in a body you have known your entire life and suddenly feeling as though you don't quite understand it anymore. It's still your body, of course. You know what it looks like. You know its history. You remember what it has been capable of. But lately, things feel different. Body changes after 45 aren't always just about how we look. Sometimes the biggest changes are in how our bodies actually feel. I think that's on

Writer: Vicki Phillips There is a particular kind of fear that can develop when exercise has hurt you before. It isn't the same as not wanting to exercise. You may actually want to. You may miss feeling strong. You may miss the feeling of moving regularly. You may even know, intellectually, that movement is important. But somewhere along the way, your body has taught you to be cautious. I've been thinking about this a lot recently. After a significant flare of my osteoarthrit

Writer: Vicki Phillips I used to have a really good morning routine. It wasn't something I had to think much about. I knew what I was doing when I got up. I exercised. I ate. I got on with my day. There was a rhythm to it. And I loved that. Since moving interstate, I've struggled to find that rhythm again. It's been two months now, which is long enough that I keep thinking I should have figured it out by now. But I haven't. I procrastinate more than I used to. Motivation feel

Writer: Vicki Phillips For many women, fitness has been framed as a form of punishment for a very long time. Exercise has been presented as something we should do because we have eaten too much, gained weight, lost discipline, or failed to meet an ideal. The message has often sounded like this: Work harder. Burn more calories. Push through discomfort. Make up for what you ate. Do not stop until you have earned rest. It is no wonder that so many women feel exhausted by the ide

Writer: Vicki Phillips Some days, strength training feels straightforward. Your body feels responsive, your energy is steady, and the movements that usually feel manageable seem to flow naturally. And then there are the other days. The days when your body feels heavier than usual. When your energy is lower, your joints feel more sensitive, or the workout that felt fine last week suddenly feels much harder. If this has happened to you, it does not mean you are failing. It does

Strength Training With Chronic Pain There was a moment recently when I had to make a decision I really didn't want to make. I had been working toward completing my full matwork Pilates certification. Something I had invested time, energy, study and hope into. And if I'm honest, my mind had fallen completely in love with the idea of becoming a Pilates instructor. Without ever really consulting my body. Because the truth is, getting up and down off mats just isn't available to

It's Not Always Easy to Learn How to Know if You're Overtraining Sometimes after a workout, it can be hard to know what you’re feeling. Is this normal fatigue? Am I building strength? Or is my body telling me I’ve done too much? For many women, especially after years of pushing through, this can feel confusing. Because we’ve often been taught to ignore the body and override its signals. But body awareness is a skill. And it can change everything. Not All Tiredness Means the S

This month, I relocated to Canberra. And while fresh starts are often packaged as exciting - all possibility and new beginnings - I think the truth is usually a little more complicated than that. Because sometimes, starting over in midlife doesn’t feel exciting. Sometimes it just feels terrifying. Sometimes it feels like standing at the edge of something you chose… while quietly wondering if you’ve lost your mind. And I think that’s especially true in midlife. When you’re you

The first time I hit a plateau in midlife, I was genuinely shocked. Things had been going so well. Slow progress, yes - but steady. Consistent. I could feel it building. And then one week, something shifted. I felt off. Heavier. Like I was working just as hard but getting less back. I did what I always do when something feels wrong. I started looking for the problem. Maybe my calories were too low. Maybe I needed more carbs. Maybe it was the stress at work, although good luck

My Experience with Strength Training with Chronic Pain After 45 For a long time in my 40s, I believed I just wasn't made for movement anymore. I'd go back to weightlifting with the best intentions — applying everything I'd learned as a personal trainer. Starting gradually. Building slowly. Doing everything right. And most of the time I'd feel fine during the workout. Then I'd wake up the next day with severe tendonitis. Over and over again. It made me feel like such a failure

How I Discovered Simple Strength Training After 45 I used to say "you never regret a workout." I cringe when I hear that now. For about two years in my 40s, I had chronic fatigue syndrome. And during that time, a 10 minute warm up was too much. I'd get to 5 minutes and need to lie down. I didn't choose gentle movement because I read about nervous system safety or discovered some new fitness philosophy. It happened because my body gave me no other option. And what I found - sl

What to Expect From Your First 4 Weeks of Strength Training After 45 Week three. I knew it well. It was the week when the program that had felt like my hope and inspiration quietly became just another burden I couldn't cope with. In a life that was already overwhelming me. The workout I'd been genuinely excited about on Monday was something I was avoiding by Friday. The training schedule I'd printed out with such optimism was already starting to feel like evidence of my own f

Where I Got Stuck During my 40s, I was what I privately called a three-week wonder. I’d find a new program, go completely all in, feel genuinely excited for the first week or two - and then crash somewhere around week three. Exhausted. Overwhelmed. Tender in ways I couldn’t quite explain. Even now, as I pack up to move house, I keep finding evidence. Ambitious training schedules I’d eagerly printed out, then quietly tucked away in some forgotten corner of a bookshelf. I used

Ever Wondered if There are Group Exercise Benefits for Women Over 45? When my father passed away, I started going to yoga classes. I never really got to know anyone there. Not properly. But I found myself looking forward to those familiar faces every week - the same women unrolling their mats, the soft sound of feet padding across the floor, the collective settling into reclining goddess pose before class began. I felt held in that space. Even by strangers. And during one of

Why It Can Be Hard to Know if Strength Training is Working After 45 If you’ve started strength training, or you’re thinking about it, there’s often a quiet question underneath it all: “How will I know if this is working?” For many women, the answer has been shaped by years of messaging around weight loss and visible transformation. The scale goes down, clothes fit differently, and that becomes the measure of success. But strength training in midlife works differently. And if

The Truth About Strength Training for Women Over 45 If you've tried to start strength training over 45 and it didn't stick, there's something I want you to know first. You didn't fail. The approach didn't fit you. That's a meaningful distinction. And understanding where things tend to go wrong can make all the difference when you're ready to try again - or try for the first time. 1. Doing Too Much Too Soon It's a common starting point. You feel motivated, you want results, so

How to Stay Consistent with Strength Training After 45 Without Motivation If you’ve ever tried to stay consistent with strength training after 45 , you’ve probably thought: “I just need more motivation.” It’s such a common belief. That if you could just feel more motivated - more disciplined, more driven - then everything would fall into place. But for many women over 45, this simply isn’t true. Motivation comes and goes. Life gets busy. Energy shifts. And relying on motivati

A Simple Strength Training Routine for Women Over 45 If you’re thinking about starting strength training after 45, one of the biggest questions is often the simplest: What does this actually look like in real life? You’ve probably seen structured workout plans that feel overwhelming - five days a week, different muscle groups, long sessions, and an intensity that doesn’t feel like it belongs in your life. It can leave you feeling like you either have to do everything… or noth

Gentle Strength Training After 45: A Calm, Sustainable Approach If you’re a thoughtful woman over 45 who wants to start building strength, you may feel caught between two extremes. On one side, there are intense fitness programs that promise dramatic results if you push hard enough. On the other, there’s the quiet voice inside you saying that your body deserves something more thoughtful, more sustainable. Many midlife women want to feel stronger. They want better energy, more
